Dubrovnik is a fortified city located on the southern coast of Croatia. It is one of the most attractive cities in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site ever since 1979. Dubrovnik is not very big city, as its population is less than fifty thousand people. However, it spreads on the coast for few kilometers and its location is perfect. City`s Old Town is fantastic and definitely should not be missed. Dubrovnik`s Old Town is the place where the popular TV Series “Game of Thrones” is filmed. The “King`s Landing” in the show is situated in Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik can be visited in any month of the year, but spring and summer months are full of people and you can feel the energy in the city. The city has a mix of sub-tropical and Mediterranean climate. Summer months have average temperatures of 28 C, while spring and autumn seasons are both pleasant with temperatures around 20 C. There is not much rainfall during the year, but strong winds called ‘Bura’ can happen from time to time, even in summer months.
Dubrovnik is protected by fortified walls that stretch for over two kilometers. An entrance fee is charged to enter the walls and you will need about one hour to take a complete tour inside. The architecture in Dubrovnik is really spectacular, so no matter where you go in the city you will be stunned by the beautiful houses, buildings, churches and other attractions.
Placa Stradun is the main street in Dubrovnik. It is the hotspot for all activities and it is usually crowded in summer months. There are lots of nice shops and restaurants here, but the prices are a bit more expensive than on other places. Old Port is another charming place where you can relax, while Rector`s Palace, Sponza Palace, Roland`s Column and Bell Tower are a few other great attractions to see in the old part of Dubrovnik. In Dubrovnik there are also a few dozen churches, museums and galleries to visit, so you will never feel bored no matter what you look for.
Those interested in beaches should know that although Dubrovnik does not have its own beach there are few in close proximity to the city. Lapad Beach is about four kilometers away from the city and is the most visited beach in Dubrovnik. There are plenty of trees behind the beach that provide good shade and there is also a pedestrianized street nearby. Banje Beach has two parts – one is private where you have to pay an entrance fee and one is public and free. It is a small, but well equipped beach. If you want to escape a bit further from Dubrovnik then visit Lokrum Island, which is ten minute boat ride away.
Dubrovnik is also known for its attractive Summer Festival which starts on 10th of July and lasts until 25th of August. A few thousand artists from all over the world are entertaining tourists in Dubrovnik with various musical performances, drama plays, concerts and other interesting open-air activities.
