Puerto Escondido Holidays

Puerto Escondido is a small tourist town located in the state of Oaxaca, on the Mexican Pacific Coast. It attracts all kinds of tourists, but it is mostly visited by surfers, solo-travelers, backpackers and local families. This town is not so famous like Cancun or Acapulco, and that is because it is only reachable through domestic air flights.

The main attraction in Puerto Escondido is the Zicatela Beach, which is the main place for many surf competitions. Near town there is a nice lagoon to the west which is very popular for relaxing in the nature, for bird-watching and fishing.

Puerto Escondido has a tropical climate, with average year-round temperatures of around 28 C, so good weather is guaranteed throughout the year.

Due to its lower scale tourism, Puerto Escondido is mostly filled with small and mid-size hotels, although there are a couple of large hotel resorts as well. There are many restaurants, mostly serving seafood and local cuisines, but there are a few quality Italian restaurants too.

Perez Gazga Avenue in Puerto Escondido is the center of all tourist activities. It is a long paved street where most of the bars, nightclubs, cafés, restaurants and shops are located. On this street you can find many nice craft stores where you can buy some interesting local products.

When it comes to beaches, Puerto Escondido has a few great beaches. Playa Zicatela is the most famous one, as that is the place where many surfers come and compete throughout the year. A thing to have in mind is that Playa Zicatela is a beach for professional surfers and experienced swimmers, because there are some very big waves. If you are not surfer you can just sit back and relax in some of the beach bars and enjoy watching the surf competitions. Other beaches worth visiting in Puerto Escondido are Playa Principal, Playa Carrizalillo and Playa Manzanillo.

All of them are very nice beaches with golden sands and gentle waves. Near all beaches there are restaurants and bars where you can relax and refresh. Nudists can enjoy their time at Zipolite Beach, which is the only recognized nudist beach in Mexico. It has been very popular place for the nudists in the past few decades and it offers a nice hippy atmosphere.

From Puerto Escondido you can go on many interesting boat trips and fishing trips. The marine life is very rich and on these boat trips you can easily spot some dolphins and sea turtles swimming along the boats. Some interesting places to visit near Puerto Escondido include Cascada de la Reforma, which is a nice waterfall about an hour drive away from the town.

There you can swim below the waterfall or have a meal in the nearby Mexican restaurant. An interesting small town near Puerto Escondido is Mazunte. It is a very quiet place full of beautiful small beaches. There you can also visit the interesting National Sea Turtle Museum. Those that want to explore further away should visit the popular Chacahua National Park and go on guided canoe trips on the mangroves.
