Cannes is a very attractive city, located on the beautiful French Riviera. In the past it used to be a tiny fishing village, but today it is a synonym for glamour, exclusivity, luxury, yachts and casinos. It is a home of the Cannes Film Festival, held in the month of May, when Cannes is visited by lots of famous movie stars, directors and other celebrities. Although classy restaurants, casinos and rich nightlife make Cannes exclusive, the city does offer lots of things for people with any budget. Tourists can admire the architecture and the beauty of the Old Town, enjoy at the lovely harbor, sunbathe on the numerous sandy beaches or swim in the beautiful sea.
Cannes has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and long, warm summers. Months between May and September have average temperatures around 25 C, but there are lots of summer days with temperatures above 30 C. January is the coldest month with an average temperature of about 4 C, and temperatures in winter almost never go below zero degrees.
Most of the activities in Cannes are revolving around the marina. There are lots of fishing boats, ships and super-yachts there. Near the marina you will find lots of charming cafés with splendid views on the sea. The nightlife in Cannes is rich, mostly attracting the wealthy to the classy bars and clubs. The boutiques and shops near the harbor are full of exclusive things and most of them are extremely expensive.
Old part of town called Le Suquet is very picturesque place to visit. There are lots of narrow cobbled streets filled with shops and restaurants. Streets from Le Suquet lead all the way to the top of a hill, where you can see the ruins from a former castle and the Chapel of St. Anne dating from the twelfth century. The view from the top is magnificent. The La Croisette promenade is a great waterfront avenue well worth of visiting too. It is most famous for its variety of great restaurants, bars and beautiful sandy beaches.
Besides exploring the city, there are a few great things you can visit offshore too. Islands of St.Marguerite and Ile-St.Honorat are both great places to see. St.Marguerite is most famous for the incarceration of the Man in the Iron Mask, whose true identity has never been found. If you visit the island you can see the cell where he was jailed in the Fort of St.Marguerite. Ile-St.Honorat is a neighboring island to St.Marguerite and there you can visit the ruins of an ancient monastery dating from the eleventh century. This island is still a home to monks that come here to worship. Main activity to monks today is production of wine, so you may taste some great wines there. Great wines can also be found in the old port called Vieux Port, which is located near the Allées des Stars or the street of the famous. It is similar street like the Walk of Fame in Hollywood where the actors leave their handprints on the pavement. There are rows of large palm trees, wonderful flower markets and restaurants here where you can relax and enjoy.
