Nice is a beautiful seaside city, unofficially considered as capital of Côte d’Azur. Situated on a fantastic bay, it constantly attracts elite guests, celebrities and high-rollers from all over the world. Even in the ancient times it attracted aristocrats and royalty with its great setting, ideal climate, rich culture and numerous events going on all the time. Nice has two large squares called Place Massena and Place Garibaldi. Old town is especially vibrant; the port area is always attractive, while Nice museums have the largest collections of contemporary and modern art outside from the capital Paris.
Nice is blessed with great weather for the bigger part of the year. Climate is Mediterranean with average summer temperatures around 30 C. Winters are mild and without too much rainfall or snowfall. Spring and autumn seasons are also great for catching sun and swimming, with average temperatures around 20 C.
Although a relatively large city, most of the historic and other interesting attractions are within a walking distance in the center of the city. The streets of old town are narrow and charming and there you can find all kinds of shops, bars and restaurants. You can easily get lost in the numerous alleys and mazes of small streets there, but it is a great place to walk around.
Interesting place to visit is Colline du Chateau near the Bay of Angels. From there you can enjoy fantastic views on the city. There used to be a castle, but today there are only remains from fort walls. However, viewing platforms above the spot where once the castle was is well worth the short trip. Those interested in history can visit some of the dozens great museums in Nice, and interesting fact is that the entrance in most of them is completely free.
Nice also has several beaches, but all of them are made of pebbles and the waters are not very child-friendly due to the currents and depths. However, there are some very nice sandy beaches in the close towns of Antibes, Cannes and Villefranche. Villefranche is especially charming little village, located just a couple of bus stops away from Nice. Not only it has a nice children-friendly beach, but it is also very relaxed and much quieter place than Nice.
Interesting trips you can take from Nice include visiting the close resort of Saint-Tropez or Haute de Cagnes. Close in the nearby hills you will find the small place of Grasse, most famous for producing all kinds of essences for French perfumes. It is a short car or bus drive away. East of Nice is the glamorous Monaco and even the Italian city of San Remo is not very far, about one hour car drive away. On the road that leads to Monaco is the beautiful village of Eze. It sits on a small hill, and there is a wonderful cactus garden in the village that offers spectacular views on the coast. You have to pay small entrance fee to enter the garden, and in this village you will also find some pretty good restaurants, art galleries and souvenir shops.
