Cayo Guillermo is a peaceful small island, located on Cuba`s northern coast. It is situated in the province of Ciego de Avila and has a territory of just thirteen square kilometers. This travel destination is popular for its fine sandy beaches stretching for over five kilometers and its crystal-clear shallow waters. One of the best beaches in Cuba called Playa Pilar is located on Cayo Guillermo`s western side. This beach got its name after the yacht ‘Pilar’, owned by the famous writer Ernest Hemingway. Cayo Guillermo was also the setting for Ernest Hemingway`s popular novel called ‘Islands in the Stream’. The white sandy beach of Playa Pilar is located seven kilometers away from the resort complex at Cayo Guillermo. This beach is about half kilometer long and there you will find a nice beach bar and a restaurant. Playa Pilar can be reached with just a ten minute scooter ride from the farthest spot in Cayo Guillermo, or by walking around half an hour.

From Cayo Guillermo you can go on a snorkeling excursion to the small island of Cayo Media Luna, located just opposite from Playa Pillar beach. There you can go swimming and sunbathing on pristine beaches or just relax in the nice beach bar with stunning sea views. There are also many excursions leading inlands, and jeep safaris are especially popular. Explore the nature and admire the beautiful scenery in the region. There are lots of nature spots and hidden treasures beside great beaches in the region.

Visit some of the tunnels and caves and see some interesting rocky formations inside. There are lots of corals and diving spots worth exploring as well. The marine life here is very rich and you will be amazed with the lively colors of tropical fish and coral reefs. If you visit the neighboring destination of Cayo Coco you can go visit the beautiful El Baga Natural Park. There you will see a very interesting wildlife including alligators, crocodiles, iguanas, flamingos, turtles and a couple of hundred different bird species. Visitors can interact with some of these animals and the park is very educational and child-friendly. Kids will love the pony rides around the lakes, while adults can enjoy relaxing in the middle of the beautiful nature.
