Perched up high on one of Santorini's volcanic craters, the village of Pyrgos (on the island's west coast) is a perfect, postcard-like village that is known for its amazing beauty, both natural and man-made, as well as a brilliant beach.
Located at the centre of the village is an ancient Venetian castle, and from there the streets unwind revealing picturesque, white-washed homes, as well as traditional Santorini taverns, as well as churches topped with blue-domed roofs. At any point of the village, there are numerous spots that are ideal for taking in beautiful sunsets, perfect for a vacation with a loved one or significant other.
While strolling through the streets of Pyrgos, tourists will be transported back in time by all of the old, white-washed churches, as well as the castle ruins and wonderful architectural sites such as the 10th century Church of Theotokaki. Another top-sight is the old Canava cave homes, which include life-sized figures acting out the daily life of the traditional Santorini village.
Though Pyrgos may be an inland village, those planning on calling the beautiful village their home during their Santorini vacation will never be all too far away from the incredible volcanic sand covered beaches that are spread all across the island. Within a quick 15 min. drive, tourists can fund themselves at one of the many Blue Flag rated beaches to the east of Pyrgos, such as Kamari and Perissa. Each of these beaches is wonderfully sandy, and slopes down to warm, crisp and clear water, as well, these beaches are both lines with bars and restaurants - perfect for completing the beach day trip. However, these beaches are not just ideal spots for spreading out a beach blanket and relaxing, they are also the perfect place to partake in some wonderful water sport, such as scuba diving, snorkelling and paddle boarding. Taking a 20 min. drive in the other direction you will find the infamous Red Beach, which is located near the red lava cliffs of Akrotiri.
One of the lovely elements of your stay in Pyrgos is the fact that it is so closely located to Santorini's capital, Thira. The town is only about a 15 min. drive from Pyrgos (if you do not want to rent a car while on vacation, there are also plenty of shuttles and car services that can help you with the commute.) Thira has undergone a makeover since an earthquake in the 1950s caused a lot of damage, and since then it has really been a boom of travel and tourism. Thira is known for being a buzz with gastronomic adventures and lovely night life. There are also plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, all of which are perched up high (about 300 m) on Santorini's volcanic cliffs.
Thanks to the beautiful weather all year round, you never have to worry what time of the year you plan your trip to Pyrgos. With temperatures dancing around the 30s during the summer months and dropping only slightly to the mid-20s during the winter months.
