What was once a tiny, little fishing village located on the southern coast of the Greek island Skiathos, in the Aegean Sea, has since turned into on of the brightest beach vacation hot spots out of any of the Aegean Islands.
Platanias may still be known as being a restful, and peaceful place, but it is certainly becoming more of a summer beacon for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle that a few of the other staples of summer beach vacation destinations come with (even those on Skiathos, as well.) With only a handful of traditional Greek taverns, as well as some bars that boast laid-back attitudes and atmospheres spread out across the quaint, little hillside village (with some even stretching out down the coastal road that leads into town,) Platanias may not be a culinary hot spot, or a top-notch travel destination for those looking to be wowed and blown away by the gastronomic extravagance of a place. However, the local establishments do serve up traditional Greek fare, and are some of the best places to grab a dish of freshly caught fish.
Thanks to the villages smaller size, nearly everything is within quick walking distance, and everything is easy to get to. This includes the outstandingly beautiful and sandy beaches that stretch out along the southern coast. Platanias boasts plenty of beaches for such a small place with three of them within a 20 min. walking radius, which includes the villages own beach that is located only about 300m from the centre of the village. One of the bonuses to making Platanias the focal point of your trip to Skiathos Island is the fact that if you decide you want to check out other elements of life on Skiathos Island you are very close to some of the island's biggest and brightest hot spots, such as the capital of the entire island, Skiathos Town. With buses taking off down the coastal road from Platanias to Skiathos Town every 15 to 20 min., it is one of the easiest, and best day trips tourists can take, and all without having to spend the money on renting a car.
While in Skiathos Town, visitors can enjoy basking in the more trendy, and modern town with all of its gastronomically challenging restaurants, lively bars and traditional Greek cafes that are set up along the beautiful and historic harbour front, complete with remnants of old Venetian fortifications.
Another day trip that is worth taking from Platanias , especially for those who are interested in the rich history of Greece, is the 10 min. drive to check out the Evangelistria Monastery, which is the place where the modern Greek flag was first raised by a group of nationalist revolutionaries back in 1807.
Not only is Platanias a beautiful, and brilliant place to visit, that happens to also be very close to some of the best and brightest restaurants and night life hot spots that Skiathos has to offer, it is also blessed by the wonderful Greek weather. This means that there is no need to worry about your calendar before booking your trip here, as the weather is lovely all year round, ranging from the mid-20s in the fall, and winter and rising to around the 30s during the popular summer months.
