Capri is a small picturesque island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy. It is located in the region of Campania, just five kilometers away from the Gulf of Naples. The main town of the island is also called Capri and the whole island used to be a favorite vacation place of the Roman Emperors. Capri is very visited in the summer period when lots of people come to this island from Sorrento or Naples on their daily excursions.
Months between June and August are the warmest with average temperatures in the upper 20s C. Winters have mild temperatures, with average temperatures a few degrees above zero. Winter months are also the rainiest, and most of the restaurants, shops and hotels are shut down until early spring. Months of April, May, September and October are ideal for visiting the island when the temperatures are above 20 C and it is less crowded with tourists.
Everything is within short distance on Capri, and you can see most of the attractions by taking a short bus ride. Some of the main attractions on the island include Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, town of Anacapri, Belvedere of Tragara with its nice promenade, ruins from Roman times and the Blue Grotto. On Capri you will also find a dozen beautiful churches, as well as several nice museums and attractive monuments. Grotta Azzura or Blue Grotto is the biggest attraction on the island, regularly visited by the tourists. Blue Grotto is a wonderful cave which has been discovered back in the 19th century. At one end of the grotto you will see the remains from very old Roman rock. The waters have unrealistically beautiful turquoise color and only narrow boats can enter this cave. Sometimes when there are waves or tides the grotto is closed, so the best time for visiting is when the weather is nice.
La Piazza is a very nice spot for relaxing on Capri, where you can enjoy the scenery and taste beautiful limoncello. Villa San Michele should not be missed where you will find some beautiful colorful gardens. Church of San Michele Arcangelo is another attractive place to visit, located in the town of Anacapri. This church is built in baroque design and inside you can admire the wonderful mosaics on the floor.
Starting from spring up until early autumn, Capri is also a home of many cultural and musical festivities. Squares of Capri towns are very lively in this period when there are concerts almost every night. Attractive festival is the Festival of San Costanzo, held in the middle of May every year. San Costanzo is the patron saint of Capri and the festivities are really nice. Town of Anacapri is popular for the Festival of San Antonio in mid-May. The International Folklore Festival in August is another very popular event in Anacapri. Musical bands from all over the world take part in this attractive festival. Settembrata Anacaprese is a very large festival held in September, celebrating the harvest of grapes. It lasts for about two weeks and there are lots of interesting shows. Capri Film Festival is another interesting event taking place every December.
