With a fantastic landscape full of beautiful colorful gardens, clean waters and fantastic hotels, the Italian Lakes provide everything you need to have a great vacation. Italian Lakes have been a holiday retreat ever since the ancient Roman times. Today, Italian Lakes are top holiday destination for northern Italians and Brits that look for a relaxing and refreshing holiday. Italian Lakes are located in the region of Lombardy, northern Italy. Most popular lakes are Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, Lake Como, Lake Lugano and Lake Garda.

Weather on the Lakes

In July there are ten hours of sunshine per day, while spring and early autumn months have pleasant temperatures around 20 C. December and January are the coldest months with average temperatures of 6 C.

Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is one of the nicest lakes in the region. The Alps are behind this lake and provide fantastic backdrop. Town of Stresa is the main place on the lake, a great spot for peaceful holiday. Lake Orta is very chic and smaller than Lake Maggiore. It is an exclusive place, surrounded by thick forests and green hills. The village of Isola di San Giulio is one of the most romantic spots that you can visit here. To the east is the popular and attractive Lake Como, which provides exciting experience. Speedboats, light airplanes, ferries and stunning villas make this place especially exclusive. There are plenty of cafés, exclusive shops and restaurants where you can enjoy nice views on the lake. Lake Como is also popular place for filming parts of James Bond`s movie ‘Casino Royale’ with Daniel Craig in the main role. Menaggio and Varenna are couple of laidback villages to visit on Lake Como. If you do not have time to visit all lakes and have time for just one, then Como definitely should not be missed. Lake Lugano is divided between Switzerland and Italy, and the smaller part is in Italy. It is also very beautiful lake with many nice charming places to see.

Lake Garda

Lake Garda is the largest of all Italian lakes and it offers many things. Here you will find lots of historic sports, restaurants with Michelin stars, classy hotels, water sport facilities and some great beaches. There is even one great theme park called Gardaland that attracts families with children. Windsurfers also love this lake, and one of the places to visit around the lake is Sirmione - a very green spot with lots of cypress trees and olive groves. There are also many thermal waters nearby. Riviera Bresciana is another area not to be missed. This is Lake Garda`s smaller version of the attractive Cote d`Azur, and most popular towns here are Gardone Riviera and Salo. Gargnano is a popular harbor town where you will find some of the best Italian restaurants. Riva del Garda is located on the lake`s northern shore and has a very interesting architecture. Malcesine is another very picturesque town to visit, located on the upper shore of the lake.
