Florence is the capital of Tuscany region in Italy. It has been traditionally ranked as one of the most attractive and most beautiful cities to visit in the world. Weather in Florence

The climate in Florence is humid sub-tropical. Because there are no strong winds in Florence, summers are much hotter than at other places in Tuscany. July and August have average temperatures of around 31 C. Winters are usually very cold and snowfalls are frequent, but snow does not stay much long on the ground. January and February are the coldest months with average temperatures of 2 C.

Culture in Florence

Wherever you go in Florence you will see amazing historic buildings and attractive spots. Florence is the place where all famous people from Italy have started their work. Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galillei, Amerigo Vespucci, Niccolo Machiavelli, Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, Giotto and Medici family are some of the most notable people from Florence.

Attractions in Florence

Visiting the Uffizi Gallery, as well as Palazzo Pitti is a must. Another great thing to see is the Florence Cathedral or the Duomo. Near the Cathedral is the Giotto's Tower. You can climb to the top of the tower and enjoy panoramic views of Florence and its surrounding area. Bargello, Accademia, churches of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella are a few other great historic places. San Lorenzo library should not be missed and there you will see a fantastic exhibition of works of the great artist Michelangelo. Piazza Della Repubblica square is in the center of Florence where you will see lots of bourgeois castles and palaces, as well as cultural cafés. This was the spot where most of the artists in the past were spending their time.

Getting around FlorencE

Florence is easily walkable city and the best thing to do is to wander the streets and explore. The city streets are among the oldest on the continent and there is always something interesting going on. When you reach the Arno River, go over Ponte Vecchio and you will find the newer area of the city called Oltrarno. If you want to take a break from museums and galleries go to the beautiful Boboli Gardens. Piazzale Michelangelo is another fantastic spot that offers great views on Florence. Follow the walking trail and see the beautiful church of San Miniato al Monte located at a top of a nearby hill. Views from there are breathtaking and the scenery is amazing.

Near Florence

A short drive away from Florence is Fiesole. Fiesole is located on the hills above Florence and from there you can enjoy watching great sunsets over the city. There you will also find a small museum and an amphitheater located on ancient Roman ruins. From Florence you can also go on numerous attractive daily excursions that lead to the towns of Arezzo, San Gimignano, Siena, Pisa and the beautiful wine region of Chianti.
