Known as The Fortress City, Valletta is the capital of Malta, and is a fully functioning living, working and commercially driven city on the island.

Though Valletta is known as being one of the more modern cities on all of Malta, it boasts such a rich historical past that it is home to one of the most concentrated historical areas in the entire world. With plenty to discover, such as statues, fountains and numerous coats of arms, tourists will have to keep your head on a swivel in order to soak it all in and not leave any sight unseen. Of course, since it is a fully functioning town, tourists visiting the city will not be left wanting more when it comes to cafés, restaurants and bars, as the city is flush with quaint little coffee shops and true gastronomical wonders - some of the best in all of Malta.

There is also a lot of shopping to be done in the capital city. With tiny little shops just off of narrow side streets, and large store selling international brands, the shopaholic on vacation will not be want for fashion, arts and jewellery to browse and purchase. Sights that should absolutely not be missed by those visiting the town are Valletta's many beautiful gardens. The city is full of them, but the three most popular ones amongst tourists, and even locals, are the Upper Barrakka Gardens, Lower Barrakka Gardens and the Hastings Gardens. Though, these are just three of the many, many gardens hidden away throughout the town just waiting to be discovered.

St. John's Cathedral and Museum should be on everybody's to see list, as well. This architectural wonder is home to some world renowned masterpieces by artists such as Caravaggio and Mattia Preti. So, if the pure architectural wonder of the cathedral is not enough culture and art to quench your cultural thirst, and so can soak in some incredible paintings.
