Soufriere is a charming little town located on the western coast of St Lucia. In the past it served as a capital city of the island, and today it largely relies on tourism thanks to the many attractions in the town and in the area surrounding the town. Soufriere has a very picturesque harbor, a nice town center, and a beautiful rainforest located at the base of a magnificent and unique drive-through volcano. Most of the services and activities in Soufriere are aimed at the tourists and there are lots of things to see and do, regardless of what type of vacation you prefer. You can enjoy at the nice sandy beaches nearby, go to spa treatments, enjoy shopping or go hiking in the rainforest. From Soufriere you can also go fishing, sailing or scuba diving.
The weather in Soufriere is similar like on the other places on the island, which means hot weather all year long. Average year-round temperatures are near 30 C, so the weather is always nice. There is a rainy season which lasts between June and November when frequent rain showers occur, but they last shortly and skies get clear pretty fast.
There are plenty of attractions near Soufriere well worth seeing. The Piton Mountains are located south of the town and are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two peaks are each over seven hundred meters high and are linked by a ridge. There is also a geothermal field there with hot springs. The Sulphur Springs are a major attraction in St Lucia, located within a nice green park. Walking through the crater of a volcano will take you past hot springs with bubbling water. You can bathe in these sulphur pools, which are believed to have healing properties.
Soufriere Estate and Fond Doux Estate are a couple of other nice landmarks to visit. Fond Doux Estate is a working cacao-processing plantation dating from the 19th century, while Soufriere Estate is an ancient colonial estate where you can relax in the sulphur baths or take a walk in the beautiful botanical garden. Diamond Falls are a natural attraction, part of the Soufriere Estate. They are very interesting to see, with their waters tumbling down from a volcano.
Nature lovers will also appreciate the Soufriere Rainforest. It has numerous hiking trails and areas that offer amazing views on the coast. The rainforest is also a home of rich wildlife and many attractive waterfalls. The Enbas Saut Trail in the rainforest stretches to over five kilometers, and this trail is one of the most picturesque trails you can find. There you can admire some rare bird species like the St Lucian parrot, the Mountain Whistler or the Black Finch. If you are more interested in beach activities and swimming, then you can visit the close resort of Anse Chastanet, which has one amazingly beautiful beach. You can easily reach this beach by following some of the hiking trails that go along the coast.
