Vieux Fort is a small, but very beautiful town located on the southern tip of St Lucia. It is around thirty kilometers away from the capital Castries, and has a very busy port. Vieux Fort got its name after an Old Fort dating from the 17th century which was located here and used to be a watching point towards the southern island of Saint Vincent. Today, Vieux Port is the main entry point for ships that come to Saint Lucia.
Being on the southernmost location on St Lucia means that Vieux Fort has a great climate. Temperatures are always high, averaging around 30 C throughout the whole year.
Vieux Fort has one of the longest and nicest stretches of white sandy beaches on St Lucia, but it is not very crowded with tourists and you will not find many hotels. There is only one large hotel resort at the end of the Anse des Sables, which translates as ‘Sandy Beach’. Sandy Beach is mostly visited by locals and tourists that decide to spend their holiday on the southern tip of St Lucia. There are a few bars located on the beach, where you can relax and enjoy stunning views on the sea. On the beach you will also find a kite-surfing school, where you can rent sun chairs and umbrellas, as well as kayaks and other equipment for windsurfing or scuba diving.
The old town center of Vieux Fort is a bit empty, as nearly all local businesses are operating on the outskirts of Vieux Fort. However, in the old town center you can see some interesting buildings, representing the traditional architecture. Fridays and Saturdays are market days in Vieux Fort where you can buy fresh fish on the big local open-air market. On one side of the main road in Vieux Fort you will find all kinds of things you need in order to have a good holiday. There are internet cafés, hardware stores, boutiques, pharmacies, banks, a supermarket and a liquor store. Just outside of Vieux Fort on the road towards Soufriere you will find one larger shopping mall that has a restaurant, supermarket, post office and a few smaller shops.
South from the town is the attractive Moule-a-Chique Peninsula. You can go there and visit the beautiful Lighthouse. There are some great viewing points on the peninsula from where you can even see the beautiful Piton Mountains. The entire area in the peninsula is very green, so nature lovers can enjoy hiking in the forests. Vieux Fort is also very well connected with other towns on the island. There are regular bus lines that will take you to the capital Castries, Laborie, Soufriere, Augier and many more other places and resorts. From the town you can also go on an excursion and visit the Maria Islands Nature Reserve. This picturesque small island serves as a nesting ground for the large sea turtles and is a home to many indigenous animal species of St Lucia.
