Burgas is a city located on the southeastern coast of Bulgaria, at the shores of Black Sea. It is the fourth biggest Bulgarian city, and is just below four hundred kilometers away from the capital Sofia. The harbor in Burgas is the largest in the country, but Burgas is still not that famous for its tourism. The city is primarily used as a stopover and a turning point for the more popular resorts on the southern Black Sea coast.
The climate in Burgas is mostly continental, but it is also influenced from the Black Sea. Average summer temperatures are in the range between 25 and 30 C. Nights can be chilly sometimes, and it is not uncommon for snow to fall down in December or January.
Burgas is a nice Bulgarian city, with a distinct charm. The center of the city is pedestrianised, so you can explore the city by foot without worrying about traffic. There are lots of green parks and monuments that you can visit. Ethnographic and Archaeological Museums are two nice places to visit where you can learn more about the early settlers and the history of the city. During the year there are lots of cultural and musical festivities going on, and one big event is the “Spirit of Burgas”. It is a week-long music festival that attracts some big domestic and international performers.
There are three lakes close to Burgas – Burgas Lake, Atanasovsko Lake and Mandrensko Lake. Burgas Lake is in the western part of Burgas and it is the largest lake in the country. Three rivers flow directly to this lake, but the water in the lake is not so good for swimming. This lake is popular for fishing, and the surrounding area is very scenic and full of interesting bird species. Atanasovsko Lake is on the northern side, and this lake is partly salty. Big part of the lake is protected by the national parks and there is a limited access. Mandrensko Lake is on the southern side of the city. A few rivers flow into this lake and there is a nice bird watching zone here where you can relax and observe the birds.
The Bay of Burgas is ideal for surfing in the summer months. There you can find several surfing and diving schools, primarily on the city`s North Beach. At the end of April there is an event called Burgas Yachting Week when participants from all over Balkan Peninsula compete with their yachts. A nice place to visit is the nearby St. Anastasia Island, which is visible from the shore. There are regular boat lines that start from the harbor bridge. Another very popular event to attend and see in Burgas is the Burgas Sand Festival. It starts in July and lasts until the end of August. Artists from all over the world are building amazing sand structures on a large area in the Sea Garden. The admission is free, so you can come and take pictures of the beautiful sand creations.
