Sozopol is a very nice holiday town on the southeastern coast of Black Sea. It is around thirty kilometers away from Burgas and is one of the nicest seaside towns in Bulgaria. Sozopol is a very charming place to visit, with lots of interesting wooden houses, mazes of narrow cobbled streets and distinct architecture. It offers a romantic atmosphere and is great place for relaxation. Best time to visit Sozopol is between May and September when the weather is pretty nice. Average summer temperatures are in the upper 20s C, while winters are not very cold with average temperatures above zero degrees.
Sozopol`s old town is definitely nice place to visit, where you will find many ancient spots, an old church and ancient amphitheater, many restaurants and a nice port. The Archeological Museum will be interesting for those that want to see a large collection of ceramics and other artifacts from the region. The Southern Fortress Wall and the ancient Tower Complex are two other impressive buildings to see.
Sozopol is known as a great place for camping because it has some great camping spots around the town. There are three beaches in Sozopol – two beaches are in the town (Central Beach and Harmani Beach) and one is on the road to Burgas (Gold Fish Beach). Central Beach can be found near the fortress walls of the old town. The access to the beach is very easy and there are usually lots of people on the beach during the summer months. The beach is relatively narrow, so it gets packed really quickly. You may not find a place if you decide to come late in the afternoon. There are sunbeds and umbrellas here, but if you do not want to rent them you may be directed to go at the end of the Central Beach where there are no such facilities.
Harmani Beach is in the new part of Sozopol. It is a bit wider beach than the Central Beach, but equally crowded in July and August. There are lots of eateries, snack bars and restaurants near this beach. There are also sunbeds and umbrellas for hire and a lifeguard service. Sea waters here are not very children-friendly, because sometimes there are strong underwater currents and waves in the afternoons.
Gold Fish Beach is a couple of kilometers away from Sozopol and is a beach of the camping site called Gold Fish. This beach is usually visited by backpackers, campers and surfers. It is longer and wider than the previous two, and also lot calmer. There are some nice surf schools here and a couple of fast food restaurants.
From Sozopol you can take numerous boat trips to close places. One popular trip is to the St. Ivan Island, which is the largest island in the Black Sea. Nesebar and Pomorie are not very far from Sozopol and can be quickly reached by fast ferry. A good option for a daily excursion would be visiting the Ravadinovo Castle which is just a couple of kilometers away from Sozopol. It is not an ancient castle with rich history, but still very nice place to visit.
