Playa Grande is a secluded beach resort located on Dominican Republic`s northern coast. It has one of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean and its name translates into Big Beach. Playa Grande is situated between Rio San Juan and Cabrera, and both of those towns are around eight kilometers away from Playa Grande. Beach towns of Rio San Juan and Cabrera are both less than half an hour drive away from Playa Grande. This tourism area is relatively new and is still expanding. Nearest town is Nagua, which is an interesting and vibrant place. About an hour drive away from Playa Grande you will find the towns of Puerto Plata, Sosua, Playa Dorada, Cabarete, Luperon and Playa Cofresi. Another interesting place to see is Samana, which is a couple of hours east from Playa Grande. Although a bit far, it is well worth the visit due to its great natural beauty and the many attractive excursions for whale-watching. Probably the best way to explore the wider area around Playa Grande is to rent a car. There are lots of nice small beaches worth exploring, as well as other attractions to see in the entire Puerto Plata Province.
From Playa Grande you can go on lots of daily excursions, boat trips and diving trips. Local excursions to Gri Gri Lagoon, Caleton beach and Diamante beach are always popular. Jeep safaris can be easily arranged at the hotels, while other very interesting things to see are the Du Du Spring Water Natural Holes. Divers should definitely go visit the attractive underwater caves located near Cabrera and La Entrada. As you can see Playa Grande has lots to offer.
