Agios Nikolaos, or also known as Ag Nik, is one of the most developed and most attractive towns for spending a holiday on the island of Crete. It is situated on the western part of Mirabello Bay, and is nearly seventy kilometers west from the capital town of Heraklion. The biggest landmark of Agios Nikolaos is its very nice lake called Voulismeni, which is located in the middle of the town and right below the cliffs. It has a circular shape and its diameter is around 140 meters. The lake flows directly into the sea through a small inlet. Around the lake there are lots of restaurants, bars and cafés, and whole area is very busy in the summer months. There are lots of music and cultural events, dance performances and other shows organized in the summer season.
Agios Nikolaos has a typical Mediterranean climate. The hottest month is July with average temperatures of around 25 C, while January is the coldest with average temperatures about 5 C. November is the month that receives the most rainfall. Usually the months between May and September are the best and pleasantly warm for the visitors.
Kitroplatia beach is the most popular beach in Ag Nik, within a walking distance from the town`s center. It is made of sand and shingle and attracts lot of visitors. Around the beach there are plenty of hotels and bars. Ammos beach is another popular sandy beach near the town`s harbor, and Havania and Ammoudi beaches are just outside town towards the way to Elouda.
Town`s marina is another nice place to relax in some of the nearby cafés and enjoy great views on the sea. It is located at the end of the town. In Agios Nikolaos you will find plenty of churches, and the most famous one is the church with the same name as the town – Agios Nikolaos. When it comes to shopping there are lots of shops and stores in the town, and you can find pretty much everything you need, starting from ceramics, woven fabrics, souvenirs, leather goods, local products to many more other things. The town does not close its doors even in the winter months, so you can visit Agios Nikolaos at any time of the year.
Some of the places well worth seeing here is the Archaeological Museum, which is relatively small but full of exhibits from Crete. There is a large collection of old coins and vases in different designs in this museum. The Folklore Museum is another interesting spot with lots of handicrafts, textiles, costumes and embroideries. Iris Museum is the place where you can see a nice exhibition of local flora.
Besides museums, you can take many boat trips and excursions that lead to the very nice Chrissi Island, which is filled with palm trees and beautiful sandy beaches. Near Agios Nikolaos you can also visit Spinaloga or Elounda Islands, tourist shops in Kritsa, or the Dikteon Cave. There are also many more other nice villages and archaeological sites in the close proximity to Agios Nikolaos.
