Platanias Holidays

Platanias is located in the northwestern coast of Crete and is split into two distinct parts: The south side of the town is a quiet and charming old town that sprawls up the hillside and is full of beautiful, scenic architecture and old time charm. While on the north side of town, you have the rambunctious part of the seaside town lined with wonderful restaurants and bars - many of which are open late-night. Platanias is also known for its lively night life and popular night clubs, some of the best on the entire island.

Of course, being that it is situated on the coast of a Greek island, Platanias is also well known for its incredible Blue Flag rated beach. The golden sanded beach stretches on for days and is dotted with little, friendly bars with beachside patios, as well as restaurants serving locally sourced seafood and international fares. Once Platanias Beach comes to an end, it rolls right into Agia Marina Beach. Both beaches are lined with umbrellas and comfortable sun loungers all the way down the sandy shores. Located on Agia Marina Beach is also a jet ski centre so if lounging in the hot, hot sun and cooling off in the crystal clear, blue water is not enough excitement for you and your travel companions, you can try your hand zipping around the sea on a jet ski. One of the benefits of staying at Platanias is that it is only a short 40 min. drive to Falasarna Beach, which has been consistently ranked as one of Europe's Top-10 beaches thanks to its endless shore of pristine sand and its crisp, clean blue water all surrounded by the mountain backdrop.

Falasarna Beach is not the only day trip that is in close proximity to the area. For those looking for a little bit of historical significance or cultural importance you can check out the ancient ruins at Aptera. Here you can take walking tours of the gigantic roofed cistern, or take a trip to the hilltop Byzantine castle that sits up high and looks down on the ocean. One of the best parts of taking any one of these day trips is truly the journey, just as much as the destination. The outstandingly lush wilderness that you pass on the way is just as scenic and picturesque as just about anything else on Crete.
