Afandou is a charming little village located on the northeastern side of the Rhodes Island. The name of the village is translated as ‘invisible’, and that is because this village has a strategic location on the Rhodes coast. In the old times, the village was practically invisible from the sea, so it was well protected from the pirates that were cruising around the sea waters. Today, it is a developed working village that attracts lots of tourists due to the great selection of tavernas, restaurants, bars, and supermarkets. In the last couple of decades it became one of the most popular places on Rhodes because of its fantastic beach, stretching to almost seven kilometers. It is by far the longest beach on the island. During the peak of the summer season, there is a small train that transfers tourists from Afandou`s main square to the beach and vice versa. Afandou is also an attractive place to visit for the golf enthusiasts, as it has a beautiful 18-hole golf course with perfect views on the sea.
The weather in Afandou is nice and pleasant starting from April up until October. July and August are the hottest months with average temperatures around 30 C. September is also very pleasant month for swimming and sunbathing with temperatures in the upper 20s C.
Afandou`s long beach is mostly sandy and soft, but at some points it gently switches to fine pebbles and then back to the golden sand again. There are some palm trees behind the beach and the sea waters are calm, shallow and clear. The beach is awarded with Blue Flag for quality and there are plenty of water sport facilities, as well as sunbeds and parasols for hire. Near the beach there are a few smaller kiosks for snacks and some tavernas.
The village of Afandou is located about a couple of kilometers inland from the beach. It is a typical small Greek village with interesting, working atmosphere. Afandou has a very nice main square. Around the square you will find some nice cafés, tavernas and tourist shops. In the village you can visit the church of Pagagia Katholiki, dating back from the 16th century. There you can see some attractive paintings and frescoes. It is situated on an ancient Christian basilica site between the village and the beach. On the hilltop above Afandou you can go visit the church of Profitis Ilias, from where you can enjoy splendid views on the sea.
Afandou nightlife is mainly low key, and is mostly focused on the tavernas and a couple of ouzo bars. If you want a bit livelier nightlife you can visit the nearby resort of Faliraki, located just ten minutes drive away. There you will find some nightclubs, as well as karaoke bars. For family fun, in Faliraki you will also find a nice water park where kids can enjoy in several pools and slides. Near the water park there is also a Luna park and a track for go-karts.
