Megali Ammos Holidays

Megali Ammos is a beach located on the northwestern side of Mykonos. This beach is the nearest beach to Mykonos Town, and can be reached by walking for just ten minutes south. Its name translates into ‘large sand’ and it is a very quiet beach. It is one of the oldest beaches on the island, but today is not very popular as it used to be. One of the reasons for that is because it is located very close to a busy main road, and it is usually visited by students on school excursions. Another reason why Megali Ammos is a very quiet beach is the frequent strong winds in the afternoon. Megali Ammos has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures are in the lower 30s C, while the winter temperatures rarely go below 10 C. Sometimes there are winds in the summer, which gives the impression that the temperatures are a bit lower than they actually are.

Megali Ammos Beach

On the Megali Ammos beach you will not find sunbeds or umbrellas for rent due to the strong winds, and because this beach is less frequented than other beaches on Mykonos Island. Megali Ammos is a good beach for windsurfers and scuba divers. The sand is very soft, the waters are shallow and in the waters you will see some big flat rocks. Late afternoons are perfect for watching the beautiful sunsets and enjoying the quietness. Sometimes there are people on the beach that fish for octopus, which is a specialty in the local taverna, or collect sea urchins from the sea. On the close hill above the beach there is one beautiful church built on a rock which you can go visit.

Mykonos Town

Megali Ammos can be a good option for those people that want to be very close to the Mykonos Town, but not inside the town. The beach is directly connected with Mykonos Town and it starts right near the windmills of the town. It is ideal for quiet, peaceful holidays, and those tourists that want more action - the center of the town with bars, pubs and clubs is just a few minutes walk away. Megali Ammos can serve as a very quiet retreat from the noise of Mykonos Town.
