Alykes Holidays

Alykes is a traditional Greek village located on the northeastern side of Zakynthos. It is around twenty kilometers away from the capital Zakynthos Town, and it sits right beside Alikanas. The northeastern coast of Zakynthos is less developed and less commercialized than the southern coast, but here you can still find plenty of things to do and see. Alykes got its name from the salterns and salt-pits located near the village. The name Alykes is a Greek word for salt-pit. There are plenty of salt flats which you can explore and most of them have an interesting wildlife. It is a relatively quiet resort, mainly attracting couples and families with small children.

Alykes has a good weather starting from spring up until early autumn. Average summer temperatures are near 30 C, and December is the month with most rainfall.

Alykes Beach

Alykes beach and its bay are among the best that you can find on Zakynthos` northern coast. The bay is a few kilometers long and there is a canal that separates the villages of Alykes and Alikanas. There is one beautiful old bridge made of stone, built over the river that flows into the sea. Beside the beach there are carriages and horses that can take you on sightseeing tours for free. The beach in Alykes is really wide, and there is plenty of space for everyone even in the peak of the holiday season. The sea waters are shallow and children-friendly, and there are also sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. Sand is very soft and golden, and on the beach you will find a few snack bars and beach bars where you can refresh and relax. Near the beach there are some good tavernas, serving Greek cuisine and international meals. Alykes beach also offers plenty of possibilities for water sports, so those seeking for more active beach life would be satisfied with the water sport facilities. Alykes has many markets and shops where tourists can find everything they need. There are also plenty of gift shops, bars and bakeries.

Getting around Alykes

If you spend your holiday in Alykes you can take a walk and visit the nearby village of Alikanas. If you do not want to walk there are regular bus lines and carriages that can take you there. In Alykes you can also rent cars, bikes or bicycles and explore the region around Alykes. Nearby you will find a few archeological points of interests which you can explore. The salt flats are interesting places to visit where you can see many colorful geckos and owls. If you want to explore further, you can take a bus and visit the capital Zakynthos Town which is half an hour bus drive away. The capital has a very interesting architecture with lots of different influences mixed together. There you will also find plenty of museums and churches to visit.

In general, Alykes is a great place for spending a relaxing holiday. It is away from the noise and crowds on the southern coast, but it still has plenty of things to offer for a nice holiday.
