Corfu Town, or also known as Kerkyra, is the capital city of Corfu Island and is the major port of all Ionian Islands. Corfu Town is one of the most elegant, charming and most beautiful towns in whole Greece. Several years ago the old part of Corfu Town was protected by UNESCO as one of the major World Heritage Sites.

Corfu Town has a typical Mediterranean climate. Winters are usually mild and rainy, while the summers are very hot. Average winter temperatures are around 10 C, while the summer temperatures are in the mid 30s C.

Corfu Town Culture

Corfu Town is a very charming place, well known for its two big castles. The architecture has strong influence from many different cultures, such as Venetian, Sicilian, English and French. Here you will see many beautiful buildings, grand palaces, picturesque squares and lovely fortresses. The mixture of different cultures and styles make Corfu very unique and elegant town. Today, Corfu is divided in southern and northern part and both parts are equally beautiful.

Old Town of Corfu

Old Town of Corfu is a must visit place. Charming narrow streets, mazes and old churches can be found here. Old town is between the new Corfu fortress and the Esplanade Square. Esplanade Square is the main square of the town and one of the largest squares in the region. Its design is made in accordance with the French botanical architecture, with lots of green trees and well arranged flowers in different colors. Esplanade Square is the main place where lots of summer festivals take place, and near the square you will find some fantastic looking houses and buildings. The famous Liston building is right beside the main square. It was built and designed by the French during their occupation. The architecture is impressive and the building has a wonderful terrace. It is a home of the finest and most luxurious restaurants and bars in town. This place is very cosmopolitan and it attracts people from all over the world.

Corfu Town has many interesting spots and lovely places. Besides the New and Old Venetian Fortress, here you will also find lots of great neighborhoods like the popular Kanoni district. Kanoni is very rich in history and here you can see the remains of an ancient city. Vlacherna Monastery located in the Kanoni district is one of the most visited and most beautiful landmarks in the town.

Ionian Academy

Near the main square you should also visit the famous Ionian Academy dating from the 19th century, the elegant looking Town Hall, Ionian Parliament, and of course, the beautiful Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George. This marvelous palace was built by the British in the 19th century in neoclassical style, and inside you will find a Museum of Arts. If you go to the Square of the Saints you will find three important and very old churches. Those are the churches of Saint John, Blessed Virgin and Saint Spyridon.
