Paleokastritsa is a very popular and one of the nicest looking villages on the Corfu Island. It is located in the northwestern part of Corfu, just over twenty kilometers away from Corfu Town. This village is situated below a nice green hill from where you can enjoy some amazing views on the sea. The weather here is typical Mediterranean, but the sea water is significantly colder than at the other places on the island. The village is not very big and usually people come here on their daily excursions. However, it still attracts families, romantic couples and other travelers that want to enjoy peaceful holiday.
In Paleokastritsa there are many tourist services, shops, restaurants, tavernas and markets to meet the needs of any traveler. There are no big nightclubs or music bars in the place, so this place is not for partygoers.
Paleokastritsa has total of six different beaches made of sand and pebbles, located in three major bays protected by cliffs and forests. Beaches are relatively small and usually crowded in the summer months when most people come here to enjoy their daily excursions. Paleokastritsa is a fantastic place for enjoying amazing scenery and swimming in crystal clear turquoise waters. Beaches have sunbeds, umbrellas, canoes, taxi boats and motor boats for rent. Some beaches can be accessed only by a boat, and all of them are well worth visiting.
There are good walking trails in the area around Paleokastritsa, and one of the most notable things to visit here is the ancient Theotokos Monastery located on a hill above Paleokastritsa. This monastery has a perfect location between lots of olive trees and green forest, and has a direct view on the sea. Inside this monastery there is a cell that has been adapted to a museum where you can see many precious and holy artifacts dating from ancient times. Besides Theotokos Monastery, you can also visit the Venetian Castrizza San Angelo dating from the 13th century. There you can also admire the magnificent views over the village.
The nearby village of Lakones should also be visited, located on the hills above Paleokastritsa. There are some very nice tavernas here where you can enjoy a quality local meal, while overlooking the beautiful bays of Paleokastritsa. The nearby castle called Angelokastro is another great place to visit. This castle is built on a very rocky and steep terrain, but it offers great views on the whole Corfu Island. From Paleokastritsa there are regular buses that go directly to the capital Corfu Town. The buses also stop at the beach in Agios Georgios where you can relax as a part of your daily excursion.
