Agia Efimia is a very quiet, traditional Greek village situated on the eastern side of Kefalonia Island. This fishing village is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and is around thirty kilometers away from the capital city of Argostoli. The town of Sami is also very close, just seven kilometers to the north. Agia Efimia is a very small village that can serve as a good base for exploring the rest of the island. It is not very commercialized place for spending a vacation and it remains traditionally local. This is a place where mostly Greek people spend their holidays, away from the larger and louder tourist centers on the island.
The weather in Agia Efimia is very nice and warm. All months between May and September are ideal for swimming. July and August are the warmest months with average temperatures of 29 C. The sea temperature in the summer months is in the mid-20s C.
Agia Efimia has a very nice, well protected harbor. It is the most popular place in the village, where many quality cafés and tavernas are located. Here you can enjoy some really nice sunsets, while socializing with the locals. All of the bars and tavernas here have a distinct Greek feeling and ambience, much different from the other tourist places. Every taverna in Agia Efimia offers a meal of the day and their owners are very kind and friendly. From the harbor you can go on a boat ride to the local hidden coves and beaches. Beyond the harbor there is a new paved walkway where people go on relaxing walks in the evenings. There are also many benches here where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the views on the island of Ithaca.
Agia Efimia has a nice natural beach made of white pebbles. It is easily accessible and very clean. The waters are also very clear and ideal for snorkeling. There are many other small beaches in the area around Agia Efimia, and some can be accessed only by a motor-boat. Beaches in and around Agia Efimia are very quiet and without facilities such as umbrellas or sun loungers. However, if you want to be on a larger and more organized beach – the popular Myrtos beach is approximately twenty minutes drive away from Agia Efimia.
Although it is a very small fishing village, Agia Efimia still offers everything one tourist needs. There are a couple of large and well-equipped supermarkets, a post office and a bank, several gift shops, bakeries, music bars and tavernas. However, this is not a wild party place for youngsters, as it is very quiet and mainly geared towards families and older generations.
Mid-July is especially lively when the local church celebrates the day of Saint Efimia. After blessings, there are plenty of nice festivities going on near the harbor with singing and dancing shows, as well as barbeques. Festivities go on late into the evening, ending with nice fireworks as a culmination of the celebration. During this festive period in July there is one big and lively market at the end of the village, selling all kinds of things to the tourists.
