Lourdata, or Lourdas, is a very small and quiet village located on Kefalonia`s southern coast. It lies on a steep hillside that ends with a nice long beach. The village is around fifteen kilometers away from the capital Argostoli and it offers a very peaceful holiday. It is a typical traditional village with one central square surrounded by plane trees. Around the square there are a few smaller bars and nice tavernas. In the narrow streets of the village you will find a couple of shops and small markets. Cypress trees and the nice pine forest of the Mount Ainos make a nice backdrop to the village. The village is ideal for walkers and hikers, as there are many attractive walkpaths.
Lourdata has very hot summers, with average temperatures around 30 C. The average nighttime summer temperatures are above 20 C. Spring season is very nice for taking excursions, while winters are mild and relatively warm.
Lourdas Bay is stretching to over two kilometers along the warm waters of the Ionian Sea. The beach is made of sand and pebble and the waters are shallow. Behind the beach there are some shaded restaurants, little bars and a few tavernas that offer locally caught fresh fish. On the beach you have the option to rent parasols and sunbeds, while boating, kayaking and diving are the most popular water activities here.
The village of Lourdata offers fine views, scenic landscape, excellent beach and limited entertainment. There is no nightlife in the village, and everything revolves around the few local tavernas. If you want to explore the region or the island, you should probably rent a car, as there is a very limited bus service in the area.
Something you can do locally is to take a trip to the town of Sami, which is about half an hour drive away. There you can visit the Drogarati Cave, famous for its interesting limestone formations. The stalactites hanging down from the natural chambers look very impressive. Besides that, you can also visit the Melissani Lake. Boat trips are very attractive here and will take you through lots of hot springs and charming blue lagoons.
In general, Lourdata is a village where you can completely relax and have a peaceful holiday. It is still in a phase of development, so not many people come here to spend their whole vacations. It is not a resort, but it is a traditional Greek village with old houses. It is a nice place to visit as a part of your daily excursions or for staying a few days. Lourdata can also serve as a nice base for exploring the wider region by a car. Younger generations do not come here because there are no night bars, clubs or similar entertainment, but it is ideal for the families and older couples that want complete peace and quiet.
