Agios Ioannis is a very nice sandy beach, located on the western part of Ithaca. Its name translates into “Saint John” and the beach took the name from the beautiful chapel of Agios Ioannis. The chapel is close to this popular beach and is well worth seeing. Although this popular beach has no special facilities or shades, it still remains as one of the very popular places for sunbathing and swimming. You need to bring an umbrella with you, because there are not many places nearby where you can hide from the summer sun. Also you should bring drinking water with you, as you will not find water fountains or many shops near the beach. Agios Ioannis is a beach where people come on their daily excursions. You can reach this beach by taking a boat ride from Vathi, or by following the dirt road coming from Spartochori.
The sea waters here are exceptionally clear, and the sand is very soft. It is not too crowded, but it can have many tourists in the peak summer months. The beach is relatively narrow, but it is very long so there is plenty of space for tourists. In the close proximity to this beach there are several beautiful smaller beaches where you can relax without too much noise. You can reach them by walking on the main beach, or you can swim to them.

The region near Agios Ioannis is nice to visit in the summer months, when local villages organize different festivals honoring the patron saints of the villages. These festivities are very attractive, with barbeques, drinks, dancing and singing until early mornings. The month of August is usually the busiest month with festivals when lots of tourists come to see the celebrations. Also at the end of June there is a large festival in honor of Agios Ioannis in the Kioni village, with lots of music shows, dances and banquets. The biggest and most popular festival is the religious festival in the first week of August held in the village of Stavros. It lasts two full days, with dances, music, wine, food and lots of entertainment. This is the favorite festival of the locals and the attendance is pretty big. Excursions are available to both places, so those festivals are the highlight of the region.
