After the capital city of Argostoli, Lixouri is the second largest town on the island of Kefalonia. It is located on the Paliki peninsula, about thirty kilometers west from the capital Argostoli. Although it is the second biggest town on the island, Lixouri is a much quieter travel option than Argostoli. The town lies on a beautiful bay and has nice views on the capital. There are regular ferry lines between the two towns, and you can explore both towns within one day. Lixouri is situated on a place when once the old city Pali used to be before it got destroyed by an earthquake several decades ago. Lixouri town and the peninsula are very flat areas, unlike most places on the island. The clay soil is ideal for agriculture, and that is the main occupation of the locals here. The whole region around Lixouri is known for its production of olive oil, grain, vegetables and wine. Today, it is a modern town that attracts lots of tourists.
Lixouri is blessed with nice weather all year long. July and August often have temperatures in the lower 30s C, but spring and early autumn months are also very nice for swimming and sunbathing. December is the month with most rainfall, but even in winter months the average temperatures are around 12 C.
The town itself does not have a beach, but just outside the town there is a nice beach called Lepeda, where all the locals and tourists go. It is about one kilometer away from the town`s center, and it is a nice wide beach. It is not very different from the most popular Xi beach, but much less crowded. Mega Lakos is another popular beach in the region that you can visit. Lixouri`s main square is called Plateia Petritsi, and that is the place where most of the activities are centered. Around the square there are many cafés, bars and shops, and in the summer months this is a very lively area with many festivals going on. One of the oldest schools of philharmonics in Greece is located here, and sometimes you can see marching bands throughout the town. If you take a walk around town you will also see lots of neoclassical buildings and many old churches, and the Monastery of Kipoureon is a great place to visit if you want to get away from the noise and crowds.
Lixouri`s harbor area and the waterfront are often very busy in the summer months, when people go on excursions to and from Argostoli. Ferries run every twenty minutes, so the surrounding streets around the harbor are very lively. In the town there are many bronze statues erected to pay tribute to popular people from the area. Bishop of Kerkini - Illias Miniatis, the fighter for freedom - Georgios Typaldos Iavokatos, the local philanthropist Kalavrita Stamos Petritis and the most popular poet from Kefalonia - Andreas Laskaratos all have attractive statues in the town. Other great place to visit in the town is the restored Venetian building Typaldos-Iakovatos. There you will find a well-equipped public library and a museum containing large collection of icons, manuscripts and other artifacts.
