Alvor Holidays

Alvor is a small fishing town that has grown into a nice holiday location. It is located very close to the bigger town of Portimao. Odiáxere River is just a few minute walk from one of the top beaches in the region. Alvor has a nice and modern port, quality shops and top restaurants for any taste. This holiday resort mainly attracts those people that seek relaxing holiday. Although it has developed a lot over the years, Alvor still kept is traditional look of a fishing village. It has a nice Portuguese look with narrow streets, white houses and small fishing boats.

Alvor's Castle

The Alvor`s Castle is located on the nearby hill, and offers stunning views on the Atlantic. It is considered as one of the greatest monuments in the history of Algarve. The Parish Church dating from the 16th century is another place to visit and admire the distinct architecture from those times. Odiáxere River in Alvor is a popular place for those that want to try kayaking or canoeing, or that just want to go on a fishing trip. The beaches besides the river are very long and always clean.

Alvor Weather

Alvor has pleasant weather throughout the year. Spring and autumn seasons are nice and warm; summers are usually very hot, while winters are mild. However, the temperature of the sea is usually cold with average temperatures of 18 C, even in the summer months. Alvor is closed down for the winter months and re-opens in the spring. You can still visit it in the winter months, but it is very quiet without so much activities going on like in the summer months.

Alvor Town

Although Alvor is relatively small town, it has a wide variety of quality restaurants that work very late at night. Here you will find many restaurants that offer all kinds of foods including Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian and Chinese cuisine. Meals are usually cheap, and you get good value for your money. Although fairly small, Alvor still offers vibrant nightlife with a few good bars and clubs. Golf enthusiasts will also find fun in Alvor, as 15 kilometers away from the town there are eight beautiful and very large golf courses. This resort also offers plenty of opportunities for taking day trips. Buses run on time, there is a good connection to surrounding places and the tickets are inexpensive.

Alvor's Attractions

Alvor`s interesting attraction for the tourists are the several elevated walkways that are built over dunes in the natural reserve Ria de Alvor. You can take walks while enjoying beautiful scenery and interesting wildlife. Alvor has a beautiful main beach, just a few meters away from the center of the town. The nice, sandy beach is almost four kilometers long. There are a few beach bars here and there, but the beach is still unspoiled, without too many facilities on it.

Alvor is a top destination for those that seek a simple, peaceful and cheap beach holiday. It does not offer too many attractions for the tourists, but it has a nice Portuguese outlook and relaxing atmosphere. In general, Alvor attracts slightly older visitors. It is ideal for families with small children, couples and people that want to have a nice and calm holiday.
