Praia da Rocha Holidays

Praia da Rocha was considered the main beach of Portimao, but over the years it has developed to a separate holiday resort. It is located in the western part of Algarve, and is just a few minutes away from the buzzing town of Portimao. In the past it used to be a main vacation spot for the Portuguese people from Portimao, but today it is visited by thousands of tourists from everywhere. August is the hottest month here with average temperatures of 26 C, while November is the wettest month with most rainfall. Despite the nice warm weather in most months of the year, the sea is usually very cold with average temperatures around 15 C.

Praia da Rocha Beach

Behind Praia da Rocha main beach there are some pretty high, but very nice looking sandstone cliffs. The beach is very wide and it has beautiful golden sand. This beach is around one kilometer long, and there are plenty of spaces available even in the highest season. Waters in Praia da Rocha are usually very calm, which makes the main beach ideal for families with children. Praia da Rocha is the closest beach to the resort, but there are two equally beautiful beaches within short distance. Praia dos Tres Castelos is a smaller, narrower beach, further sub-divided to a few smaller beaches, while Praia do Vau is the quietest and most sheltered beach of all three. Main beach is equipped with sunbeds and parasols, and here you can also find some snack bars and kiosks. In the summer months the main beach is supervised by lifeguards. There are many opportunities for water sport activities here, and the children can enjoy riding many interesting inflatables.

Praia da Rocha Attractions and Facilities

The strip above the main beach is full of cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. The place gets very lively in the evenings with live music nights and karaoke shows. At the end of the main street you will find the fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar, which used to serve as a defense from the pirates in the past. It dates back from the 17th century and it offers some amazing views on the sea and the marina. Throughout the beach resort you will find many pedestrian areas, and there is one wooden promenade above the beach.

Praia da Rocha is a popular place for those that want to have an immediate access to a great beach, and for those that want to have good options for dining and partying. There is even one casino on the main avenue that organizes different music shows each night. Apart from gambling, you can have a great meal here or join some dancing competitions.

Although small, Praia da Rocha is a great place for spending a vacation and it has many things to offer. It is a nice, tourist place and if you want to explore more, then you can always visit Portimao just a few minutes away. Boat trips go regularly from here, and even in winter months there are many interesting events going on.
