Luz Holidays

Luz, or also known as Praia da Luz, is located in Algarve`s western side of the coast. The translation of its name is “Beach of Light”. Luz is a very quiet holiday town, ideal for family vacations. Luz`s location and climate are perfect. Although Luz is a very nice and modern destination, it has kept its traditional charm and is still considered a low key vacation spot. August is traditionally the busiest time of the year. It is also the warmest month of the year. Luz gets closed in November and opens up again in spring. The waters are very clear, but cold even in summer months. The average sea temperature is about 18 C, and that is because of the Atlantic currents that flow here.

Luz Attractions

Luz mostly attracts families with children and a bit older visitors. Nightlife is relatively low key, with several bars and pubs in the town`s center. The overall atmosphere in the town is calm and relaxed, and Luz can serve as good base for traveling to neighboring places. The town is well connected with other places with several bus lines. Interestingly, despite its development to a modern holiday resort, here you will find old ruins from ancient Roman times. Beside the promenade there is a wall behind which you will find Roman baths that date all the way back to the third century. That is the last historical place that can be found in this place between all other modern tourist facilities.

Luz Beach

Luz has a long sandy beach and pretty calm waters. The beach is family-friendly and in the summer period there are lifeguards patrolling the beach. You have many opportunities to take part in different water activities, such as riding banana boats, kayaking or jet-skiing. Rocha Negra cliff at the end of the beach offers great views on the sea. Rocha Negra is beautiful natural monument well worth seeing. These cliffs were formed from volcanic lava a very long time ago. The erosions formed the cliffs into beautiful formations known as Black Rocks.

Great thing about Luz is that is a much calmer resort than other holiday places in the region. There are no large groups of young tourists looking to get cheap drinks. There are plenty of great restaurants and eateries, as well as nice cafés. Zoo located in nearby Lagos is very attractive for children, while most of the water parks and theme parks are located in the central part of Algarve. South of Luz is the attractive place of Ponte de Piede where you will find many nice cliffs, coves, sea arches and caves that can be properly explored by renting a boat. You can also rent a bike and take a short trip to the nice little fishing village of Burgau.

Luz Accommodation

In general, Luz is a family-based resort with many smaller hotels, apartments and larger hotel complexes. You have surprisingly many options when it comes to eating in restaurants. For those that want a nighttime fun, there is one nice nightclub located near the seafront. Luz is a perfect option if you want peaceful and relaxing holiday, without too much noise.
