Sagres is a very nice holiday resort in Algarve, located on the western corner of the region. It has a very good location and traditionally attracts families, surf lovers and backpackers. The waters are warm and nice and here you will find many surfing schools and beautiful beaches. Sagres is still relatively quiet place and tourist expansion has not spoiled the resort. There are lots of nice small houses, lined up on the streets. It has a nice fishing harbor, and mid-August is a very good time to visit this place when the temperatures are the highest. In August there is a big festival celebrating the local saint patron of the town and there are some great fireworks. Festivities last for several days and there are lots of fun activities going on.
Due to its location far west in Algarve region, some people may get the impression that Sagres is an empty place, exposed to winds and chilly weather. Quite the contrary, Sagres is sunny and calm almost the whole year and the sunsets here are magnificent. The square Praca da Republica is a very lively place and the harbor offers some great views. Surfers love Sagres because the waters here create great waves for surfing and the water is warmer. Besides surfing, Sagres has many wide spaces for cycling; you can go diving or just walking and admiring the town. Sagres is also popular place for campers, and you will see lots of camper vans near the beaches.
Sagres is about fifteen minutes away from Lagos, which is the biggest town in the western part of Algarve. There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars in Sagres, but if you want livelier nightlife or want to explore more beaches you can easily and quickly reach Lagos. Sagres has great beaches with golden sand, and most of them are protected by cliffs. The scenery is amazing, and beaches have plenty of facilities for water sports and other fun.
In Sagres you can visit the very popular navigation school built by Prince Henry the Navigator. It is a historic place reminding of the times when great sea explorers were going on sea adventures. Fortaleza de Sagres is a fortress well worth of visiting, dating back from the 15th century. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and inside its walls you will find a chapel dating from the 14th century. Another interesting sight is the large compass called Wind Rose, which has a diameter of forty meters. Cabo de São Vincente is a place dedicated to St.Vincent, having big towers over 75 meters high. You can enjoy some stunning views on the sea from here. Forte de Beliche is another small fortress where you will find a beautiful, small chapel. Nowadays it has a restaurant inside and you can also find an accommodation here. Caves of Monte Frances are also breathtaking, located just a couple of kilometers north from Sagres. Just join in some of the numerous boat excursions and enjoy exploring the region.
