Quarteira Holidays

Quarteira is a relatively small coastal holiday town in central Algarve. It is often overshadowed by the bigger nearby town of Vilamoura. However, Quarteira has a much laid back atmosphere than Vilamoura, and is a perfect place for having a relaxing holiday. In the past it used to be a tiny village of local fishermen, but today Quarteira is a top tourist center in the Algarve region. Quarteira has developed a lot over the last decade, but it still kept its traditional feel and is a very popular holiday destination for Portuguese people. Town`s wide promenade called “Marginal” is lined with palm trees and is an ideal area for taking leisure walks. Spring season is very nice in Quarteira due to the warm temperatures, and from May until September you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing. In October most of the tourist facilities are closed for the winter season and they open again for the Easter holidays in spring.

Quarteira Attractions

Quarteira is a great vacation place for the whole family – the beach is very close, there are lots of hotels and affordable accommodation, and there is great choice when it comes to shops, bars and restaurants. Nightlife is relatively low key, with several bars working late into the night.

Quarteira Beaches

Quarteira has one very nice, sandy beach that stretches for over two kilometers. It has a Blue Flag for highest quality, and there are lots of water sport facilities on it. Beach is also children-friendly and the waters are calm and shallow. There are many bars and eateries behind the beach where you can quickly grab a snack or get some refreshments. You will still find local fishermen in Quarteira that go fishing in the mornings and then sell the catch of the day. There is a big market in Quarteira where you can find all kinds of fish and other sea products.

Quarteira Sports Facilities

Quarteira and surrounding area has lots of nice golf courses, and water parks are also close to the town. In the town there are many interesting options for family fun. You can go bowling, carting, play tennis or try horseback riding. Usually on Wednesdays there is a cheap local market where you can buy lots of interesting local things for cheap prices. You can also catch a tourist train and visit the nearby town of Vilamoura. There you can relax at the marina or take a walk in the town and see many interesting things.

Quarteira Culture & History

From Quarteira you can go on a day trip to the Algarve`s capital city of Faro. Faro is rich with history; it has a nice architecture and many beautiful squares. In the old town of Faro you will find a Cathedral dating from to the 13th century. Cathedral towers offer stunning views on the town and the national park of Ria Formosa. Taking a ferry trip to the sandy island called Ilha de Farol is also advisable. The trip lasts about half an hour cruising through the natural park of Ria Formosa, and it goes through some beautiful lagoons and narrow channels. Just sit back, relax and admire the surroundings.
