Portimao Holidays

Portimao is one of the largest holiday towns in the region, located in the western part of Algarve. The town went through a rapid growth in the past few decades and today it is a very popular resort. It has plenty of tourist facilities and it offers many different kinds of entertainment for its guests. There are numerous bars, pubs, discotheques and restaurants here, which makes it one of the top places for spending a vacation in Algarve. Algarve weather is pleasant throughout the year, with summer temperatures rising around 30 C.

Portimao`s Old Town

Portimao`s old town has some nice old buildings, mixed together with new apartments and houses in different colors. Center of Portimao is a great place for the shoppers, as this is the spot with lots of different shops offering everything, ranging from souvenirs and small gifts to brand clothing and leather materials. Of course, there are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy any kind of cuisine and drinks.

Portimao`s Riverfront

The riverfront is the heart and soul of Portimao. Here you will find excellent gardens and numerous spots for relaxation. Town museum is also located here, where you can learn more about the history of Portimao and its important role in the region. There also some pretty good fish restaurants here, offering the catch of the day. Portimao is well known for its sardines, and the month of August is a nice period to visit the town when the traditional Sardine Festival is held in town. Thousands of tourists flood this place to enjoy the festivities and eat tasty sardines.

Portimao Attractions

Besides the summer festivals, there are many other events held during the year. Lots of sporting events take place here, and Portimao has become very popular for the sports scene in the recent years. Due to its great location - speed boat races, Dakar rally, yachting competitions are all regularly held here. Portimao is also the home of Algarve Motorway where the World Championship of bike racing takes place each year. Some teams from Formula 1 also use this track to train and develop their motors.

Portimao's Marina

Town`s marina is another nice place to visit, where you can enjoy the sights of beautifully colored houses, or you can just sit in one of the many bars and restaurants. The marina is located close to Praia da Rocha and is near the river. There are many hotels and apartments near Praia da Rocha, where you will find some nice beaches.

Portimao offers something for everybody, regardless of age. You can take trips to caves, go on fishing trips or go on a boating trip to watch the dolphins. Arade River is always popular place to visit. In the close proximity of the town there are a few large golf courses, while the zoo in Lagos is also not very far away. Guia on the east is a great spot to visit for its zoo marine park, while Lagos` water park called Slide and Splash is the most popular water park in the whole region.
