The small village of Porches is conveniently located on a hill in the central part of Algarve region. It is one of those traditional Algarve villages where you can experience what is the real life like in the Algarve region. Porches has a good location overlooking the coast, but it is a little village having one smaller mini-market, a couple of nice restaurants and a few cafés. It is a relatively quiet place, but it can be ideal spot if you plan to explore and take trips to the surrounding places. Beautiful beaches of Albandeira, Benagil and Marinha are several minutes drive away. July and August are the warmest months in Porches, with average annual temperatures of 24 C. Months between November and February can be chilly, and December gets most rainfall.

Porches History & Charms

Porches has kept its historical outlook and traditional charm. It is a typical Algarve village with very old, bright colored houses, narrow cobbled streets and interesting architecture. The parish church dominates the village, and that is the gathering place for the tourists. House chimneys are another interesting feature in the house architecture, as the design of chimneys often signalizes the society status of the house owner.

Porches Culture

Porches is the most popular for its potteries, clay pits, ceramics and its local wines. You will find some unique pottery designs here, which can be quite expensive, but of great quality. Porches is well known for production of terracotta pots. These pots were once used as storage for water, wine or olive oil. You can still find some interesting decorations with Moorish designs, placed on everyday items.

Porches Accommodation

Accommodation options in Porches are limited. Tourists usually come here for a daytime visit and stay in close places nearby. There are no large groups of tourists here, but this place is nice if you want to spend some quiet time away from loud resorts. You would be surprised from the quality restaurants here. Although there are not many, you can enjoy some great local or international meals. Restaurants are usually crowded in summer months, so you should book in advance. The few bars here have a very relaxing atmosphere, ideal for unwinding and enjoying a day off from the fast-paced life of the bigger holiday resorts. There is no nightlife here, as everything gets very quiet way before midnight. However, the village is ideally located very close to the bigger resort of Armacao de Pera, where you can go to sunbath, swim or go partying. From here you can take daytime trips to visit some water parks or go golfing in nearby places, or you can also visit the town of Portimao where you will find one buzzing market and many nice restaurants near the town`s harbor.

In general, Porches is ideal for those that seek vacation much different than the usual. It is a perfect spot for spending a few peaceful days. The village is very close to other big resorts, so you have plenty of opportunities to get entertained.
