Lagos Holidays

Lagos is an amazing town, full of history. It is located in the western part of the Algarve region and it is a great destination for spending a holiday for people of all age groups. Its coastline is simply beautiful. There are numerous cliffs in different shapes, as well as large golden beaches with perfectly calm waters. Lagos has developed a lot over the years, but it still has kept its traditional charm and authentic Portuguese feel. Lagos can offer plenty of things to the tourists, and those that spend a holiday here will surely leave with lots of great memories. Lagos also has a great climate. You can sunbathe and swim from May up until late October. Summer months often have temperatures that go up to mid-30s C.

Lagos Attractions

Lagos is a great blend of great beaches, modern tourist facilities and Portuguese culture. There are plenty of activities that you can take part in. From visiting water parks, botanical gardens and animal parks, to seeing historical places and exploring hiking trails – Lagos has it all. There are also lots of day trips that you can join in from here. The most attractive day trips would be visiting the old town of Silves and the vibrant town of Sagres. Silves has a rich history and many interesting places, while Sagres has a beautiful castle and attractive architecture. Day trip to Sagres would be ideal for those that look for surfing waters, as that is a place with bigger waves.

Lagos Old Town

Lagos` old town is well preserved. It is circled by Moorish walls built in the 16th century. There are a couple of watchtowers that offer amazing views on the town. The Governors Castle is in the center of the town, beside the main square. Here you will also find the statue of Prince Henry the Navigator overlooking the sea. Church of Igreja da Santa Maria is next to the square and is another great place to see. It dates back from the 15th century, but it has been rebuilt sometime during the 18th century. The church of San Sebastian, built between 14th and 16th century is also very close. It is located on a higher hill near the town`s fish market and has a great view on the bay. Praca de Gil Eanes is another vibrant square in the town`s center, where most of the summer activities take place. Street performers, live music shows, open air festivals are all taking place on this square.

Lagos Beaches

Lagos beaches are some of the best that can be found in the whole Algarve region. There are four different beaches that are within short walking distance from the center of the town. Meia Praia is the longest sandy beach in Lagos, stretching to over three kilometers. Praia do Pinhao and Praia Dona Ana are smaller, but equally great beaches that have perfectly clear waters and are well protected by sandstone cliffs. Praia da Batata is located near the estuary and it offers great views on the sea.
